Ouray literally sparkles in winter, nestled at the base of the beautiful San Juan Mountains powdered with brilliant white snow. The weather is mild and nearly everyday is sunny. Ouray’s winter climate is totally different than the valley to the north or the high country in every other direction. The town sits on a “swiss cheese” of geothermal strata (hence the hot springs). Deer feed all winter at the ballpark next to the hot springs pool. The mountainsides that form Ouray’s “alpine cathedral” gather heat during the sunny day and radiate it back during the night.
